As you may already know, Hurricane Matthew ravaged its way through Haiti all the way down through the US, hitting Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Our 16 pallets of antibiotics, pain relievers and oral rehydration medicine were scheduled to start their journey from Georgia to Port Au Prince at the beginning of last week. However, with the storm coming in, the Georgia coast was completely evacuated- forcing our transit partners out of the area until tomorrow.

The Shipment

The shipment was to be flown into Port Au Prince, Haiti, from where it would be transported via armed convoy in order to ensure its safety amidst reports of looting. The destination- Les Cayes – one of the areas that were worst hit by the hurricane.

Coincidentally, the main bridge connecting Port Au Price to Les Cayes was completely wiped out.  Excruciatingly long days went by with no means of access between the two cities. Fortunately, a Brazilian nonprofit has now stepped in and built a temporary bridge through which we, and others, will be able to reach Les Cayes. This is one of those critical times when we have been truly reminded of the power of working together.

What now?

Our shipment was transported to a warehouse in Miami, from where it will be flown out tomorrow, October 18 at 11 a.m on Amerijet 777. Once it arrives in Port Au Prince, it will take two days to be cleared through customs, after which its journey to Les Cayes will begin. By next weekend, it will be at its destination, and will be distributed to 20 medical facilities and be administered to people in need.

We look forward to sharing stories of the lives saved in the coming days.
