Did you know?
1 in 8 people worldwide don’t get enough food to eat? Think about it- there are 7.4 billion people in the world. That means that 842,000,000 people are either getting very little or nothing at all to eat- every single day.
To put that in perspective, the number of hungry people in the world exceeds the populations of the U.S., Canada and the European Union combined.
World hunger
Hunger does not refer to missing a meal or two. It is a debilitating crisis that is affecting every corner of the globe. It is, hand in hand with malnutrition, in fact, the number one health risk and cause of death worldwide.
The faces of hunger- who are these 842 million people?
- 34 million children suffer from severe acute malnutrition, a deadly condition if not treated. An estimated 26% of the world’s children are stunted due to malnutrition. Severe malnutrition is preventable, and treatable.
- Many working poor are stranded in food desserts- low income regions with few or no grocery stores where they can get fresh food.
